What does MoraHealth's AI summary analyze, and what not?

MoraHealth's AI summary explains your lab, radiology and pathology reports in plain language. What it analyzes, what it does not, and what data is sent.

MoraHealth's AI summary explains a lab, radiology or pathology report you uploaded in plain language; it does not diagnose and does not recommend treatment. A summary is made only when you ask for one, and only for the report you choose. This post explains what the summary looks at, where it stops, and what information is shared along the way.

MoraHealth's core job is storing your health records; the AI summary is an optional helper on top. For the app as a whole, start with What is MoraHealth?

What does the AI summary analyze?#

The summary focuses on different things depending on the type of report. All three share the same structure: a short summary, key points, an overall assessment, and questions you can ask your doctor.

Lab reports#

  • Out-of-range values: each one is explained, keeping its value, unit and the lab's reference range.
  • Priority: being "out of range" and being "significant" are not the same thing. A mild deviation is kept apart from a result that needs attention first.
  • Comparison with an earlier test: if you pick one of your earlier lab reports when asking for the summary, it explains how the values changed.
  • Patterns: notable findings that show up across several tests together are pointed out.
  • Notable normal results: values that are normal on their own but may matter alongside others are not skipped.

Radiology reports#

  • Findings are grouped by organ; measurements and locations are kept as written in the report.
  • The radiologist's conclusion is shown separately.
  • If you pick an earlier imaging report, each finding is marked as new, larger, smaller or similar.

Pathology reports#

  • Diagnosis, histologic type, grade, surgical margins, lymph nodes and staging are summarized one by one, as far as the report states them.
  • Biomarker results, if any, are explained individually.
  • Benign findings are kept apart from findings that need follow-up.

Linking to your history#

For a more accurate reading, the summary also takes into account your age, sex, medications, conditions and past operations. For lab tests, a pregnancy record on the test date is considered too, since the expected range of some values changes during pregnancy. These links are made only as far as the data supports them; no cause and effect is drawn from a weak connection.

Missing information#

If something in the report or your records limits the reading (a test with no reference range, for example), the summary says so plainly. Missing information is never filled in by guessing.

What does the AI summary not do?#

  • It does not diagnose. A high value does not mean a condition is present, and a normal value does not mean it is absent; the summary keeps this distinction.
  • It does not recommend medication or treatment. It gives no advice on starting, stopping or changing the dose of a medication.
  • It does not calculate risk scores. It produces no scores for general health, disease or life-expectancy risk.
  • No needless alarm, no needless reassurance. It does not link a mild deviation to serious diseases, and it does not play down a significant result with "don't worry".
  • It does not interpret what is not in the report. For radiology and pathology only the report text is assessed; images or slides are not examined.

If a result may need prompt attention, it is shown as a separate warning at the top of the summary. That warning is not a diagnosis either; it is a reminder to consult a health professional.

What data is sent?#

For a summary, the following is sent to our AI provider:

SentNot sent
The content of the report you choseYour name, your email address
The earlier report, if you chose one to compare withYour other reports
Your age and sexPhone, address, emergency contacts
Your medications, conditions and operationsYour blood pressure and glucose readings and your appointments

You are asked for your approval before anything is sent; if you do not approve, nothing is sent. The provider processes this data only to produce the summary and does not use it to train its own products. The details are in section 7 of the Membership Agreement and Privacy Notice.

When you upload a report, the file may also need to be processed by AI so its details can be read; that also happens only with your approval. How each type of report is read is explained in Which reports can I upload?

How do you get a summary?#

  1. Open the report on the Lab Results, Radiology or Pathology page and select Analyze.
  2. For lab and radiology reports, pick an earlier report to compare with if you like, or choose No comparison.
  3. Approve the transfer. The summary is ready in a few seconds and is kept under the report.

Using the summary with your doctor#

Often the most useful part of a summary is the questions you can ask your doctor at the end. Reading the summary before an appointment and noting those questions helps the most important topics get covered in a short visit. Nothing in a summary replaces the judgement of the doctor who ordered your test and examines you.
